At Khalifa University, the Department of Management Science and Engineering brings together engineering, analytics and management to address challenges facing industry and society. We investigate how complex systems work, how decisions shape their performance, and how they can become more efficient, resilient and sustainable. How do we move resources, products and people better?
Reliable supply networks keep businesses operating and communities connected. We study how to design and manage the movement of goods, resources and people, balancing efficiency with resilience, sustainability and service needs.
Research strengths: Supply chain design and analytics; logistics and transportation optimization; ports and maritime operations; procurement and inventory management; supply chain resilience and risk; digital, sustainable and circular supply chains; humanitarian and healthcare logistics.
Illustrative research questions: How can a port coordinate its operations with inland transport to reduce delays? How can organizations maintain essential supplies when demand changes or transport routes are disrupted?
How do we enable an affordable and sustainable transition?
Energy transitions require choices about technologies, investment, resources and policy. We examine their economic and environmental implications to inform pathways toward an affordable, resilient and sustainable future.

How do we design and manage better operating systems?
The performance of an organization depends on how people, processes, technology and assets work together. We study these relationships to improve the design and management of industrial and service systems, with a focus on reliable, productive and human-centred operations.
Research strengths: Systems design, analysis and thinking; industrial and service-system design; operations management and business analytics; operational excellence and Lean Six Sigma; human factors and ergonomics; risk, reliability and resilience; asset and maintenance management; digital transformation and Industry 4.0.
Illustrative research questions: How can an organization redesign its processes to reduce waste and improve reliability? How can data and human factors inform maintenance decisions and the adoption of new technologies.
Our themes share a common set of methods. This allows researchers to combine expertise, test alternatives and approach a challenge from more than one perspective.
Model and optimize systems. Operations research and optimization, simulation and digital twins, and systems thinking and modelling help us understand complex operations and compare possible improvements.
Learn from data. AI and machine learning, business forecasting, econometrics, and statistical and causal analysis help us identify patterns, anticipate change and investigate what drives outcomes.
Support decisions and design. Risk management and decision-making, together with design thinking, help us evaluate uncertainty and develop solutions that respond to practical needs.
