Collaboration pairs biopharmaceutical R&D experience with governed UAE health and genomic datasets to examine genetic factors in chronic respiratory disease and inform future therapeutic discovery

91影视 of Science and Technology and Sanofi signed a strategic research agreement to advance genomic research into asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

The collaboration will undertake a genome-wide association study (GWAS), combining Khalifa University鈥檚 genomic research expertise with Sanofi鈥檚 biopharmaceutical research and development capabilities. By examining genetic variations associated with asthma and COPD in the study population, the research aims to generate locally relevant scientific evidence, improve understanding of disease biology, and identify pathways for further investigation and potential therapeutic discovery. The partnership also seeks to address the historical underrepresentation of regional populations in large-scale genomic research and strengthen the UAE鈥檚 capabilities in genomic and precision medicine research.

The study seeks to expand the evidence base for populations historically underrepresented in global genomic studies, supporting more locally relevant biomedical research and future precision-medicine investigations.

鈥淎dvancing precision medicine requires scientific evidence that reflects the genetic diversity of the populations we aim to serve. Through this collaboration with Sanofi, Khalifa University is bringing its genomic research capabilities to the study of asthma and COPD, helping address gaps in regional genomic knowledge while strengthening the UAE鈥檚 capacity for advanced biomedical research. By connecting population genomics with international research expertise, we aim to generate insights that can inform future scientific discovery and contribute to more targeted approaches to understanding chronic respiratory diseases,鈥 said Prof. Habiba Al Safar, Dean of the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at Khalifa University.

鈥淏reakthrough medicines begin with a deep understanding of human biology, and population genomics is one of the most powerful tools we have to uncover the root drivers of chronic disease,鈥 said Baptiste de Clarens, General Manager, Vaccines, Greater Gulf at Sanofi. 鈥淭his agreement with Khalifa University underscores our commitment to bringing our global R&D expertise to Abu Dhabi鈥檚 life sciences ecosystem and advancing early research alongside the country鈥檚 leading academic institutions.鈥

鈥淭his agreement marks an important milestone for respiratory research in the UAE. Asthma and COPD are complex diseases, and genome-wide association research can help identify genetic signals linked to disease and biological pathways that warrant further study. Examining these questions using governed data from the UAE can strengthen an evidence base that has historically underrepresented regional populations. For patients, the value begins with better knowledge and a clearer understanding of disease biology which can help shape the questions and directions of future research,鈥 said Mohamed Abdulkader, Medical Head, Specialty Care, Greater Gulf Sanofi.

The study has received Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval and regulatory authorization from the Department of Health 鈥 Abu Dhabi. Following completion of onboarding to the Department of Health鈥檚 secure Trusted Research Environment (TRE), the joint research team will analyze governed datasets from the Emirati Genome Program and Malaffi, Abu Dhabi鈥檚 health information exchange platform, in full compliance with applicable privacy, security and research-governance requirements.

Findings from the collaboration will be evaluated through rigorous scientific analysis and shared via appropriate peer-reviewed channels.

Study Finds Island Once Held a Larger Ancient Population听

Researchers at Khalifa University鈥檚 Environment and Geophysical Sciences () Lab have combined artificial intelligence, satellite radar imaging and ground-penetrating radar surveys to identify previously undocumented subsurface features on Siniyah Island in Umm Al Quwain, demonstrating a non-invasive approach that could help archaeologists investigate heritage sites across the UAE.听

The team applied the methodology to the whole Siniyah Island to identify from space potential areas where archaeological remains are still buried. Seven distinct and previously unknown areas were found. For the validation phase via geophysical surveys, three priority zones surrounding Siniyah Island’s sixth-century Christian monastery, one of the UAE’s most significant archaeological discoveries, were selected to validate the findings from satellite-AI analysis and to construct a 3D model of the subsurface features that can be used by archaeologists to guide excavation with no damage to the remains.听听

The findings were in the International Journal of Applied Earth Observation and Geoinformation by Dr. Diana Francis, Head of ENGEOS Lab, and researchers Sonia Santos-Assun莽茫o, Charfeddine Cherif, Moamen Ali and Mohammed Y. Ali from the ENGEOS Lab and the Department of Earth Sciences.听

The surveys revealed numerous subsurface anomalies and structural patterns consistent with archaeological features, including rectangular formations and wall-like structures. Two notable features detected in one survey area closely matched structures visible in historical satellite imagery, despite having become reburied by sand by the time field surveys were conducted.听

The number and spread of anomalies found across all three zones suggest Siniyah Island once supported more people than the structures already excavated and mapped would indicate. Beyond the archaeological findings themselves, the study highlights the potential of advanced geospatial-AI technologies to support heritage preservation and guide future investigations across the UAE and other arid environments.听

The work also demonstrated that the methodology remained effective in challenging environmental conditions. Siniyah Island鈥檚 low elevation, salt intrusion and sabkha soils can significantly weaken radar signals and complicate subsurface investigations. Despite these conditions, the team successfully mapped buried features and generated three-dimensional visualizations of potential structures.听

The team used a similar satellite-to-ground approach before, at the Saruq Al-Hadid site in Dubai, where it helped confirm more than 400 subsurface anomalies linked to suspected Iron Age and Wadi Suq-era occupation.听

Siniyah Island is home to one of the UAE鈥檚 most significant archaeological sites, including the ancient Christian monastery and evidence of early settlements. Researchers first analyzed satellite radar imagery and environmental datasets using machine-learning techniques to identify areas most likely to contain buried archaeological remains. The resulting probability maps helped narrow the search area and guide detailed investigations on the ground.听

The team then applied Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) tomography, a technique that can provide information about subsurface structures by analyzing radar signals collected from multiple satellite passes. Areas identified as having archaeological potential were subsequently surveyed using Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR), which sends electromagnetic pulses into the ground and records reflections from buried features.听

Dr. Diana Francis said: 鈥淭his study demonstrates how AI, satellite remote sensing and ground-based geophysical surveys can work together to reduce uncertainty in archaeological exploration. By combining large-scale satellite screening with targeted ground investigations, we can identify areas of interest more efficiently while minimizing disturbance to heritage sites.鈥澨

Brain-Inspired Technology Could Help Wearable Devices and Robots Use Less Power and Remember What They Have Detected

When a smartphone recognizes a face, one component captures the image, another stores the information and a processor interprets it. Most electronic vision systems including phone cameras to robots, work in this way. Signals must move between these separate components before the system can respond, adding delay, wiring and energy consumption.

A research team led by Khalifa University has developed a flexible device, known as a photomemristor that combines light sensing and memory in a single component and begins processing the light signal through changes in its electrical conductance.

This approach, known as in-sensor computing, follows a brain-inspired, or neuromorphic model in which adjustable electrical states perform functions similar to biological synapses.

The study was conducted by Dr.听Shoaib Anwer, Dr.听Muhammad Umair Khan,听Nada AbuHamra, Prof.听Mahmoud Al-Qutayri and Prof.听Baker Mohammad from Khalifa University鈥檚 Centre for Intelligent Computing, Networks and Sensing (ICONS) and Department of Computer and Information Engineering, with Dr. Waqas Waheed from New York University Abu Dhabi.

The听, 鈥2D MXene-Enabled Unidirectional Flexible Optoelectronic Memristor Toward Energy-Efficient Neuromorphic Photosensing,鈥 was published in Energy & Environmental Materials, a top 1% journal.

Flexible and transparent, the device can fit onto curved surfaces where rigid electronics are difficult to use. By integrating sensing, memory, and early processing, the approach could reduce the energy and time required to move information between components, opening new possibilities for lighter, more responsive artificial vision systems.

By combining materials design, device engineering, and AI hardware evaluation, the project establishes a promising pathway from laboratory research toward practical technology.

The next steps include optimizing and demonstrating uniform, reliable device arrays; integrating these devices with electronics that read and process their signals; and validating the complete system for specific applications in 鈥榠n-sensor鈥 computing and neuromorphic vision platforms.

Dr. Shoaib Anwer said: “By engineering the interfaces of 2D materials, we created a flexible device in which the 2D/2D material stack can detect light, retain the optical history, and provide analog states for neuromorphic computing with a unit cell. This combination is important for future in-sensor vision computing.”

Dr. Muhammad Umair Khan said: 鈥淭he advance comes from device engineering and harvesting light-sensitive functional materials properties on an indium tin oxide-coated flexible polymer. Electrical testing showed self-rectifying, unidirectional analog switching with a rectification ratio of about 10^3. Light provided a second way to program the same device to tune the memory.鈥
