Dr. Ahsan received his PhD from Jeonbuk National University in 2008, followed by postdoctoral training at Toyama University, Japan. He joined King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) as an Assistant Professor in 2010 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2016. In 2019, he joined Khalifa University as an Associate Professor of Chemistry, a position he held until 2026, before being promoted to Full Professor in July 2026. He currently also serves as Associate Chair for Postgraduate Studies in the Department of Chemistry at Khalifa University.
His research focuses on the design, synthesis, and advanced characterization of functional materials for clean energy conversion and storage, with particular emphasis on electrochemical technologies. His current research directions include the development of corrosion-resistant electrocatalysts for seawater electrolysis; advancing electrochemical CO鈧 conversion toward C鈧 products through C–C coupling and designing cost-effective electrocatalysts for electrochemical nitrogen fixation; and understanding the complex interfacial chemistry of thermally stable electrolytes for next-generation energy-storage systems and sustainable technologies. He has supervised and co-supervised numerous graduate students working across these emerging areas of clean energy materials and applied electrochemistry.
Dr. Ahsan has authored more than 155 peer-reviewed publications, presented over 80 papers at international conferences/proceedings, contributed seven book chapters, and holds six U.S. patents. His scholarly impact is reflected in a Scopus H-index of 51 and more than 8,717 citations.
Beyond research and teaching, he has held several academic and research leadership positions. He served as the Founding Director of the Advanced Materials Chemistry Center (AMCC) from 2022 to 2024 and currently serves as Deputy Director of CeCaS. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), a member of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Academy of Scientists (MBRAS), and Chair of the American Ceramic Society (ACerS) UAE Chapter.
Dr. Ahsan has held visiting research appointments at leading international institutions, including EPFL, the University of Tokyo, Nagoya University, Caltech, and the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology (SIAT), Chinese Academy of Sciences. He also contributes actively to the international scientific community through editorial roles with several leading journals, including Communications Engineering (external editor), Materials Research Bulletin, Nano Research Energy, and Ultrasonics Sonochemistry.
