Muhammad Bakr Abdelghany(Senior, IEEE) received a B.Sc. degree in Computer and Systems Engineering and an M.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering, Minia University, Minia, Egypt, in 2010 and 2015, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in Systems and Control Engineering from the University of Sannio, Italy, in 2022. In 2010, he served as a Teaching Assistant with the Department of Computer and Systems Engineering at Minia University, Egypt. He is currently with Khalifa University of Science and Technology (\textbf{Assistant Professor}) and on leave from Minia University (Assistant Professor). His research interests include control synthesis, cyber-physical systems, computer-controlled systems, green hydrogen production, renewable energy systems, and embedded systems. His research has significantly impacted the hydrogen, energy, control systems, and automation research communities, as evidenced by approximately 1500 citations and an \textbf{h-index of 22}. Dr. Abdelghany has mentored/co-supervised 15 Ph.D. /Master’s students. He reviews various reputable journals, including the IEEE Control Systems Society, the IEEE Power and Energy Society, and the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society. He is also a guest editor for a special issue of the IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications on control applications in hydrogen energy systems. He was honored with prestigious academic awards, including \textbf{Outstanding Reviewer} for IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy in 2023 and for IEEE Transactions on Network Science and Engineering in 2024, as well as the \textbf{2025 Best Paper Award from IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy}, the highest scholarly distinction conferred by one of IEEE’s most selective Transactions, awarded following an intensive five-round review and evaluation process. Furthermore, he was honored with prestigious academic awards, including the Best Paper Award at the IEEE Industrial Electronics and Applications Conference (IEACon) and the Best Paper Award at the IEEE IAS Annual Meeting in 2024. Dr. Abdelghany is a senior researcher on several international projects.
With stakeholders and industry sectors, Dr. Abdelghany has worked closely with stakeholders and industry sectors, such as Emirates Global Aluminium, Emirates Steel Arkan, and Ohmium International, focusing on scalable hydrogen solutions to address real-world challenges. Recently, under the esteemed leadership of KU and with the invaluable support of Prof. Ahmed Al-Durra, he had the honor of speaking alongside global stakeholders, leading polar scientists, and policymakers as part of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) initiative. In collaboration with the Emirates Polar Program and the Arctic Circle, hosted by KU, he contributed to discussions around global challenges and solutions for the Arctic, Antarctic, and Third Pole regions during a Polar Seminar that brought together key international figures. Additionally, he is working closely with the transportation industry sector in the UAE, including Masdar and Etihad Rail, to promote multidisciplinary research proposals that integrate transportation engineering, electrical engineering, environmental engineering, and energy logistics. As a consulting engineer collaborating with KU, TU Dortmund, and a startup in Germany, he has explored combining different areas of expertise to advance local energy systems. The aim is to establish a consulting and software startup in Abu Dhabi to help industries optimize energy infrastructure investments through advanced simulation tools and scenario analyses.
With respect to mentoring students, Dr. Abdelghany has significantly contributed to the mentorship of graduate students and the development of educational programs focused on hydrogen technologies and renewable energy systems. His mentorship of Ph.D. students aims to enhance research quality, accelerate progress, and foster a collaborative learning environment. By leveraging the combined expertise of supervisors and students, he has advanced key research projects, particularly in renewable energy. Dr. Abdelghany is actively involved in proposing future Ph.D. research opportunities at KU, focusing on innovative projects that will contribute to the field and the university's academic reputation. His guidance emphasizes research methods, academic writing, and professional development for graduate students.
According to my teaching philosophy, teaching is the crown jewel of all academic activities. Fromrom my perspective, it represents one of the most fulfilling and rewarding responsibilities within an academic career. Over the past 15 years as a university teacher, I have had the opportunity to teach, assess, and supervise students across various institutions, gaining valuable insights throughout the process. I have accumulated significant experience teaching undergraduate and graduate students in multiple subjects that draw upon applied and social sciences. My teaching experience encompasses a broad range of disciplines, including systems, control, energy, applied computing, and drones, supported by my academic background spanning multiple departments, such as computer and systems engineering and electrical engineering. For instance, I have taught subjects such as intelligent and optimal control, network control, dynamic system modeling, optimization and planning, data-driven and statistical mathematical analysis, applied mathematics, engineering drawing, software and computer architecture, digital and electronic design, and embedded computer control. Additionally, I have developed online courses and prepared curriculum accreditation reports. Indeed, I have taught at four universities and worked effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures. As a visible minority, I prioritize incorporating diverse perspectives into my classroom and strive to ensure the inclusion and engagement of every student. Teaching at different universities and across other disciplines has given me greater flexibility and capability to enhance my teaching skills, develop effective course portfolios that satisfy the highest academic criteria, and engage students at different intellectual levels in the educational process.
