Inclusion Challenges for People of Determination in Al Ain City
  • Challenge 1: Accessible Journey from Parking to Inside Al Jahili Park: Can a Person of Determination move independently from parking areas to the park entrance and internal pathways without encountering obstacles, gaps in accessibility, or unclear directions?
  • Challenge 2: Personalized In-Park Guidance at Al Towayya Park: How can visitors identify the most suitable entrances, shaded routes, quiet areas, accessible facilities, and comfortable paths tailored to their specific accessibility needs?
  • Challenge 3: Safe Routing in Green Mubazzarah: In mountainous tourism environments, the shortest route is not always the safest or most accessible. How can technology help users navigate considering slope, surface conditions, distance, weather, and vehicle movement?
  • Challenge 4: Smart Crossing and Continuous Sidewalks on Khalid bin Al Waleed Street: How can we ensure safe, seamless movement between sidewalks, play areas, walking paths, and PoD zones, particularly for individuals who require additional crossing time, audio guidance, or enhanced navigation support?
  • Challenge 5: From Accessible Equipment to Inclusive Play at Al Amal Park: Accessible playground equipment alone is not enough. How can we create truly inclusive play experiences that encourage interaction, engagement, and shared enjoyment among children with diverse abilities?

The I.Can Experience: Learning Through Immersive Design

Empathy-driven innovation through experiential learning and co-design

The I.Can Philosophy
Students don’t just design for people with disabilities they experience disability firsthand through simulation samples and assistive technology demonstrations, fostering true empathy and understanding.

The hackathon will be blended with KU and ZA students

Experiential Learning Components

  • Vision Simulation — Experience low vision, color blindness, and complete blindness using simulation glasses
  • Mobility Challenges — Navigate environments using wheelchairs, walkers, and mobility aids
  • Cognitive Experience — Understand learning differences through simulation exercises

The Challenge

  • 1 in 7 adults experience mobility difficulty
  • Every hour, someone in UAE suffers a stroke

Physical disabilities affect movement, coordination, and independence. The UAE’s younger stroke population (avg. age 45 vs. 65 globally) creates unique long-term rehabilitation needs.
